My Literacy Journey: Embracing Challenges and Achieving Success!

Hello, I am Katherine Aybar, a senior at NJCU, majoring in Chemistry, and set to graduate in May with a Bachelor’s of Science. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, and my literacy journey began in elementary school with the introduction of “Libro Nacho,” a pivotal book that laid the foundation for my reading and writing skills. Initially, I was reluctant towards reading and writing. However, my parents’ unwavering support and encouragement fueled my academic pursuits. I have early memories of dedicated homework sessions upon returning home from school, showcasing my commitment to learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Engaging in “teacher and students” play with my cousins allowed me to reinforce my own understanding of subjects, particularly math, which is my preferred domain. The trajectory of my literacy development took a significant turn when I moved to the United States, where I faced the challenge of learning a new language and adapting to a different educational system. With the support of my uncle Nelson and an ESL teacher, I navigated through the hurdles, finding joy in the process despite the occasional frustration. Returning to the Dominican Republic for schooling presented new challenges, requiring constant adjustment to diverse languages, and learning methodologies. Despite the complexities, I emerged as a fluent bilingual, proficient in both English and Spanish. As I mastered English, I continued to share my knowledge, playing the role of a teacher with my cousins, imparting not only language skills but also my love for math.

What continues to inspire my literacy journey is a deep-rooted passion for knowledge. I am driven by the desire to learn about everything I can. Reflecting on my fifth-grade achievement, earning trophies for outstanding grades in ELA and Math state exams a year after arriving in the United States, reinforces my belief in my capabilities. I pride myself on being a fast and adaptable learner, a skill that has been instrumental in my academic success. As I stand on the brink of graduation, I recognize the transformative power of literacy in shaping my academic and personal growth. The support of my family, the challenges faced, and the accomplishments I achieved all contribute to the rich tapestry of my literacy journey. Beyond my coursework, I have also been actively involved in clubs and organizations on campus. Volunteering at the Liberty Science Center and leading events for the Chemistry Club, for example, has allowed me to give back to society, while also gaining valuable skills and experiences. I have also worked as a front desk assistant and admissions ambassador, helping students and families navigate campus services and facilities.

Throughout my academic journey, I have encountered various challenges and obstacles. However, my perseverance and determination have allowed me to overcome them and emerge stronger. I have learned that with hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude, anything is possible. As I look towards the future, I am excited about the possibilities that await me. I plan to pursue a career in the field of chemistry, with a focus on research and development or Engineering. My goal is to make significant contributions to the field, while also inspiring the next generation of scientists.
